Pedestrian Friendly

Pedestrian Friendly Elements of the Vision:

  • Widening Sidewalks at intersections - This provides opportunity for sculpture, plantings, bike racks, and seating.  It narrows the pedestrian crossing length and encourages drivers to slow down.  It also defines and protects the parking lane.

  • Improved Street Lighting and Buried Utilities - Bury unsightly utilities underground and improve street lighting with historic-styled street lights throughout the neighborhood.

  • Bike Racks - Install bike racks throughout to promote biking

  • Additional Street Trees - Wherever feasible, additional street trees will add shade and improve the quality of the streetscape.

  • Story Trail - The story trail includes an interactive photographic mural at the corner of Race Street and 15th Street that will tell neighborhood stories through photos and text and will be connected to a historic walking path through the neighborhood, explained and referenced in the mural.  The walking path will be denoted with special pavers, a timeline, and at key intersections and locations, sculpture, monuments, and artifacts.  This trail will connect present experiences to the stories of the neighborhood's past.  Possible partners in this feature of public art and education could be Art Works, Peaslee Neighborhood Center, the Parks Department and the Department of Transportation.
